Sights of Belgrade

kalemegdan Kalemegdan, the most beautiful and largest of Belgrade's parks is also the most important historical location, dominated as it is by the Belgrade Fortress which towers over the Sava and Danube confluence. The name of Kalemegdan relates to the wide plateau around the Fortress which was converted into a park in the 1880's. While the Fortress was the main military stronghold of Belgrade, the plateau was used to observe and ambush the enemy. Consequently its name derives from the Turkish words 'kale' meaning 'fort' and 'meydan' meaning 'field'. The Turks use to call Kalemegdan Fikir-bayir which means "hill for contemplation". The landscaping of the park was begun on the order of Prince Mihailo Obrenovic after the surrender of the Fortress to the Serbs in 1867. The initial sketches for the layout of Kalemegdan were drawn up by the first Belgrade town planner Emilijan Josimovic, and planting took place between 1873 and 1875.The Kalemegdan park is approached from Knez Mihailova street (Entrance to Great Kalemegdan - Veliki Kalemegdan) and from Uzun-Mirkova street (entrance to Little Kalemegdan - Mali Kalemegdan). Kalemegdan contains the Cvijeta Zuzoric Art Pavilion, the Music Pavilion, and the Great Steps (Veliko stepenište), the Zoo, children's fun fair, and a number of monuments, sculptures, sports and catering facilities.

Skadarlija, the old Bohemian quarter of Belgrade grew up at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century when the cafés were frequented by the leading lights of Belgrade cultural life. It is most frequently compared to the Paris quarter of Montmartre, both because of its appearance and its happy, ebullient, creative atmosphere. This part of the city was formed in the first half of the 19th century, and in 1872 Skadarska street was first given its name, at the same time as the houses were given numbers. Many famous writer, actors, painters and journalists once lived in Skadarlija. Skadarlija took on its Bohemian appearance from 1901 onwards, when following the demolition of the famous Dardaneli inn, the regulars relocated to the inns in Skadarlija. Many local and foreign personalities "spent their best days here - by night."

Gradski Dvorovi i Dedinjski Dvorovi

Today there are two palace complexes in Belgrade, - the one in town comprising the Old Palace (Stari dvor) and the New Palace (Novi dvor), and the one in Dedinje, which includes the Royal Palace (Kraljevski dvor) and the White Palace (Beli dvor). The Old Palace, which was the home of the Serbian Obrenovic dynasty was built between 1882 and 1884 and designed by the architect Aleksandar Bugarski in the Academic style of the 19th century. It was built with the intention of surpassing all the previous residences of Serbian rulers, for use by the newly created Kingdom of Serbia with King Milan Obrenovic as head of state. After reconstruction following the heavy damaged suffered during both world wars the appearance of the Palace differs significantly from the original design. The New Palace was built for the residential needs of the Karadordevic dynasty during the period from 1911 to 1922. The building was designed by the prominent Belgrade architect Stojan Titelbah, on the site of the demolished Palace of the Prince Regent Mihailo Obrenovic. The Royal Palace in Dedinje was built during the period from 1924-1929 by order of King Aleksandar I as the official royal residence. It was designed by the architect Živojin Nikolic and the academician Nikolaj Krasnov from the Royal Academy. Today it is the home of the heir to the throne, Aleksandar II and his family. The building of the White Palace, which is part of the Royal Palace complex, was built to the wishes of King Aleksandar I as a residence for his sons. It was built from 1934 to 1937 to a design by the architect Aleksandar Đordevic. The ground floor of this Classical building contains a Ceremonial Hall and a suite of Drawing rooms decorated in Louis XV and XVI style with Venetian chandeliers. It also contains the Palace Library, which used to contain 35,000 books, and the Ceremonial Dining Room furnished in Chippendale style.

Topčider

During the first decades of the 19th century this area was full of vineyards and country houses belonging to the wealthy. In this area of ponds, reeds and rushes, the first park in Belgrade emerged. Between 1831 and 1833 plane trees were planted in what were the old lime pits around Prince Miloš's Residence, and they still stand there today. The planting of Topcider was carried out by able Czech gardeners. The central section made up of flower beds is of symmetrical design and faces Miloš's residence, finishing in front of a stone obelisk (erected in 1859) thereby emphasising the formal character of the area. After the Second World War, regulation of the Topcider River was carried out, which led to this natural complex becoming Belgrade's most frequented picnic spot. Within the beautiful woodland surroundings are the Topcider Church (Topciderska crkva), the Guard House (Dom garde), and a number of restaurants.
